Happy December

Getting Organized:
In your home and homeschool

Welcome to a new month! I am thankful for December. It is my favorite month of the year. I enjoy the Holidays, and I enjoy celebrating the reason for Christmas with the birth of Jesus. I take a detour from the regular school lessons, except for math and reading. I have specifically structured my school year to allow for this change in my regular plans.Especially if you have little ones, consider doing some different activities in your day. It will give you a boost after the last couple of months of homeschooling.

We enjoy doing Christmas crafts and making presents. We enjoy Christmas music and decorating the house. We enjoy doing things for others. There are just so many things to enjoy about this month.

Have you started your shopping and decorating? Never fear, if you haven’t! The FlyLady has Super Holiday Cruising Missions to help you get ready.

The other fun thing in December with The FlyLady is that the Habit of the Month is to Pamper Yourself. As homeschool moms, we are not great at doing this. We will practice this all month long. We have to take care of our health, so we can take care of our families. Resting, relaxing, and doing something we enjoy is good for our bodies. If we are running around on adrenaline all the time, it harms out body. By taking a few minutes daily to relax, we reduce the stress we put on our bodies. Exercise, eating healthy, and drinking water are also a big part of taking care of our health. All of four of these are monthly habits with The FlyLady because we can be neglectful of them.

Using the basic routines listed below will also help you reduce your stress. The Before Bed Routine helps you get ready for the next day, so your mornings are peaceful. The Morning Routine helps you with your day, and you will be more productive if you get dressed to the shoes first thing in the morning. The Afternoon Routine helps you get the laundry moving along and dinner in process, so you can serve a healthy meal in the evenings. It all works together in small steps.

Happy December! I hope it is the best one yet for all of you!

Finish Christmas Decorating and Wrapping

Getting Organized:
In your home and homeschool

If you didn’t finish decorating yesterday, let’s finish it today. If you haven’t started wrapping your presents yet, start that today. If you wrap a little at a time, it is not so tiring. Staging it out can help you in many ways. Be sure you update your gifts purchased list, if you find gifts to wrap that you did not write down. Put the receipts in an envelope and label it Christmas 2016. Hang on to these until you are sure nothing will need to be returned after Christmas.

Do you have any favorite Christmas traditions with your family? If not, think of some fun ideas, such as caroling, driving around to look at Christmas lights, making cookies, reading the parts of the Christmas story from the Bible, watching Christmas movies, or having a Christmas card signing party.

We are working on our Christmas plans a little at a time, so we have time to do these fun things and make memories with our families.

Have a great day!

Decking the Halls – Getting Organized

Getting Organized:
In your home and homeschool

The Christmas Holiday is approaching, and we have been working in steady steps to get ready. Today, let’s put away the fall decor and start putting out our Christmas decorations. My children love to help me decorate for the Holidays, so we can get a lot done in 15 minutes. I have learned to set my perfectionism aside and let them be creative. During the years when they were all shorter than me, I would decorate the top of the tree. Now all of them except for one is taller than I am, so I am relegated to the bottom of the tree when I put ornaments on the tree. We put out some candles and other decorations. We live out in a rural area, so we do not decorate our porch or our yard. We can decorate in a day. Some years, I pull out my Christmas china, and we use it nightly. I usually wait until the first week of December to do that. If you have a lot of small children or are pregnant, keep it simple on decorations and shopping. Two of my children were born in January, and the Christmas before their births, I kept things very simple. It was still memorable.

Making Christmas Crafts – Getting Organized

Getting Organized:
In your home and homeschool

Do you make Christmas crafts with your children? Every year, I try to do some crafts with my children during December. It’s a nice change of pace from checking off boxes and doing workbooks. Being creative stimulates different parts of the brain. It helps them grow and learn. Yes, it can be messy. But we are learning to clean our messes as we go. As warm as it has been in the South this year, we can even do some messy crafts outside. Remember that children and their clothes are washable. Break out the paints and markers. Sit with them and do the projects, too. Let go of perfectionism and ENJOY this time with your children.

Here is my favorite Christmas craft to do: Cornstarch Ornaments.

Our Zone of the Week is divided up since December starts later in the week. We will start the week in the Living Room, and then we will move to the Front Porch, Entryway, and Dining Room. Get your lace up shoes on every morning. It is going to be a great week!

Dealing with Running Injuries

Finish Line Pics from 3 Marathons

October 2016 (bottom left)

Running Injuries

When you start running, you increase your health and often increase your risk for injury. The best advice I have for avoiding injury is to not over-train and listen to your body. I had shin splints and plantar fasciitis after I trained and ran my first marathon. It took two months to heal from those injuries. I had to learn that I did not have to run at maximum capacity every single time I ran, and I had to make sure I included stretching and foam rolling into my daily plan. Cross training with core work, swimming, and biking also helped me come back from injury. Now that I have completed three marathons and am training for my fourth marathon, I have a training plan that accommodates more than just running. I have walking, strength training, stretching, and yoga to help me become a stronger runner.

If you find yourself injured, you need to listen to medical advice for healing. I had been on a running streak of 406 days without missing a day when I had to stop running every day in order to heal. It was hard mentally to stop the run streak, but I knew I had to do it. My goal is to be a life-long runner. I had to take a break and come back slowly from the injury.

There are many things you can do to prevent injury. I suggest you read books on running and training. If you have the budget, hiring a running coach can also help you stay injury-free. Wearing proper shoes has been instrumental in my ability to keep injuries to a minimum. I have to track the mileage I put on a pair of shoes, but I can usually tell by how my feet and legs feel when it is time for a new pair of shoes. I also rotate through several pairs of shoes each week. This helps the shoes dry out well and get their “spring” back before I run in them again. I was fitted at a running store for my shoes, and it made all the difference in how I recovered to have a pair of shoes made for my running stride and how I strike the ground.

Another way to lessen the chances of injury is to not compare yourself to what someone else can do. There will likely be people who are faster than you. If you try to keep up with them, you increase your chances of injury. I think my shin splints came from trying to keep pace with people who ran faster than I run. If I am doing that for an interval of a short distance, that it not too bad. But if I am trying to do it for a longer run, it can result in too much pressure when striking the ground. Also trying to increase mileage too rapidly can result in injury. You should only increase mileage by 10 to 15 percent each week for 3 weeks in a row. Then you should back off the increase for a week. This will give your body recovery time.

Happy running!

Back to Routines – Getting Organized

Getting Organized:
In your home and homeschool

The day after a Holiday can be a let down. You prepare for a Holiday celebration, and you enjoy celebrating with your family. Then everyone goes back to their homes and their normal lives. The good news is that we have another Holiday to prepare for, so we can change gears today to start getting ready for Christmas.

While many of you might be planning Holiday shopping today, there are many of us who are home and back to doing our routines. Our routines are the backbone of our family. Our routines bring peace. Children and adults love routines. We need routines to help us with laundry, cooking, cleaning, sleeping, and more.

It helps when we take time to plan a menu and grocery shop. This saves time and money. It is also better for our health to cook at home versus eating out or picking up take out food.

By keeping the laundry routine going, we have clean clothes and aren’t scrambling to put together outfits.

By having a schedule for Home Blessings, our homes are cleaned regularly. This brings peace to our homes.

By having a bedtime, everyone in the house gets adequate rest and feels better. This gives an overall feeling of happiness in the house when everyone has had enough sleep.

Today’s zone mission is to clean under your bed. Declutter some of the stuff you have stored under there and sweep or vacuum under your bed.

Have a great week-end!
If you have any questions or tips, please email me. I enjoy hearing from my readers.

Peace in Your Home – Getting Organized

Getting Organized:
In your home and homeschool

Today’s mission is for you to dust the fixtures and baseboards in your master bedroom. How does that relate to having peace in your home?

Having a clean, decluttered home brings peace to the family. Have a fresh, clean bedroom helps you relax and fall asleep. Detail cleaning and dusting helps you breathe better in your bedroom. Many times our bedrooms are neglected while we work on the other areas of the house, but I think the bedroom is one of your most important rooms in the house. Your bedroom should be your sanctuary. It should be as clutter free as possible. You will rest better and enjoy seeing it first thing in the morning.

If you are not making your bed daily, start today. You will start to see a difference in how you feel when you walk into your room during the day, and it is clean, decluttered, and the bed is made. You will notice I combined the Wednesday and Thursday Home Blessings today, so you won’t have to do any tomorrow.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving Holiday tomorrow!

Have a great day!

Declutter Seasonal Clothing – Getting Organized

Getting Organized:
In your home and homeschool

Today, let’s spend 15 minutes decluttering seasonal clothes. Look through your warm weather clothes. What did you not wear in the spring or summer? Unless it is a special event outfit, consider letting it go. Check your children’s closets. Pull out anything that does not fit and put these clothes in a box to donate. Check their winter coats and see if they still fit. If not, you can donate the coats that are too small and start looking for a replacement before it gets too cold. It has been a very warm fall in the South, so we are still wearing our warm weather clothing. Eventually, we will need our winter coats, and we will be ready.

While you are looking in the closets, check shoes, too. My sons seem to outgrow shoes more than once a season, and I can always find a pair of shoes in the back of the closet that no longer fits. So take a few minutes to declutter some shoes!

Have a wonderful day!

A Week of Thankfulness

Getting Organized:
In your home and homeschool

As we approach Thanksgiving this week, use it as an opportunity to show your gratefulness. We have many, many blessings, and it is important to share that with our children. If you know widows or widowers in your church or community, reach out to them this week and bless them with a card or a visit and a baked good. If you have a big meal at your home for Thanksgiving, invite them to join you.

The Holiday season can be difficult for those who have lost loved ones. Our family has had many losses, and we miss them daily. It just seems to be closer to our awareness at the Holidays.

If you have ideas on how to show Thankfulness, please share those with me. You can email me at Tami@TamiFox.com.

This week we are going to detail clean in the Master Bedroom. You can also give these missions to your children for them to do in their bedrooms this week. We deserve a clean, peaceful room to sleep in each night. So let’s work on making it beautiful and peaceful.
