Decluttering and Making Your Kitchen Shine

Getting Organized:
In your Home and Homeschool

Dear Friends,
How was your weekend? This week we are going to declutter and detail clean in the kitchen. This is a well-used room in your home, and it has a tendency to collect clutter on the flat surfaces.
Zone 2 Missions: The Kitchen
Monday – Clean your stovetop and decluter one area of your kitchen counters.
Tuesday – Clean the silverware holder and declutter a different portion of your counters.
Wednesday – Clean out leftovers from the fridge and declutter another portion of your counters.
Thursday – Declutter unnecessary items from the plastic wrap drawer and declutter another area in the kitchen.
Friday – Check your cleaning supplies under the sink and sweep and mop the kitchen floor.
Set your timers and then take a break when it goes off!
For those of you who homeschool, this is a great week to start going through your homeschool supplies and books. Pass items on to others who may need them.
Last week, I took several boxes of craft supplies to our local thrift store that uses proceeds for Safe Harbor. They have a community classroom where you can pay a nominal feel to make crafts and support the ministry.
If you are attending any homeschool conferences this spring, decluttering first helps you know what you need to purchase, and it helps you have space to put the books you buy.
Weekly Menu Plan
Monday – Spaghetti and Salad
Tuesday – Tacos
Wednesday – Soup/Sandwiches
Thursday – Chicken and Salad
Friday – Take out
Enjoy your week! Keep your routines simple.
Your Home Blessing for today is to wash the sheets.
Your Zone Mission for Monday is to clean the top of your stove and declutter top of one kitchen counter.
My menu plan for Monday is spaghetti and salad.
Have a blessed day!

Punishment or Reward

Getting Organized:
In your Home and Homeschool

Dear Friends,
Do you struggle with getting your children on board with their daily routines?
Over the years, I have seen much more success with my children following through on their routines when I praise them and reward them.
As children are learning new routines, they need encouragement. If you are fussing at them for not doing their routines perfectly or forgetting something, it causes them to shut down and not want to try.
You need to be clear with your children about what you want them to do, and you cannot expect them to do everything all at once. YOU are doing the baby steps to getting organized. They also need to do baby steps in mastering their routines.
For children, I suggest you start with them getting dressed down to the shoes first thing in the morning. This may mean that you ask them to lay their clothes out the night before, but you can just start today. Tell them to get dressed and ready for the day. Brush their teeth and comb their hair. This will help them to be ready for the day.
They should do this daily for a week. Praise them for getting dressed first thing in the morning.
The next routine is making their beds when they get up. This does not have to be perfect. They just need to pull their covers up fluff their pillows and move on. Some of them may have stuffed animals they arrange.
So the second week, they are laying their clothes out at night, getting dressed down to the shoes, and making their beds.
Some of you are already thinking about how messy their bedroom is, and you are thinking about their stuff that is all over the house.
After they finish their school work for the day, give them a specific instruction to deal with one of these areas. It needs to be a short and sweet mission. Otherwise, they will get distracted and do nothing. You are going to build them up to a 15-minute hot spot clean up session, but these first few sessions might be 5 minutes or so.
For instance, if their room is messy, tell them to bring you all of their dirty clothes and pick up the floor. You might tell them another time to collect any trash. Another mission would be to put their toys away.
If they have a lot of toys, you may need to invest in plastic bins and sort their toys. You can do toy rotation and not allow them to have access to everything all of the time.
Now, let’s talk about their stuff that is around the house. You need to help them corral their stuff. They need a place for all of their things. If they have more stuff than storage, you need to help them declutter.
You can let them have a yard sale of their stuff. They can use the money for a fun activity.
Throughout this process, you have to praise your children. My children know that they need to do their daily routines and school work to get a reward of an activity.
It is rare that I have used negative consequences for them not doing their routines. I do not yell or scream about their routines. If I am calling them to the house from the woods, I will yell for them to come inside, but that is the extent of it.
If you parent them in anger over their routines, they will have negative feelings about their routines. Your goal is for them to encourage them, so they WANT to do their routines.
I always get questions about families with more than one child. Sometimes one child is more willing to do routines than others. If you have a reward planned for everyone, what do you do about the child who is unwilling to do his or her routines? That is a tough one, but sometimes I have had a child sit with me while the others did the activity. I did NOT cancel the whole activity for everyone.
Work on your reward system and put it on the calendar or a chart, so you can keep up with successes and build toward the reward.
Today’s Zone Mission is to declutter in the entryway.
Your Home Blessing for today is to take off the trash, sweep, and mop.
My menu plan for Friday is take out.
Have a great weekend

Do you often feel frustrated?

Getting Organized:
In your Home and Homeschool

Dear Friends,
How many of you are frustrated at times when you are interrupted while doing your routines?
Most of you who read my articles are homeschool moms, and many of you are trying to do your daily routines in between caring for the children and getting your homeschool moving along. You get frustrated because you can’t get it all done when you want to get it done.
First, take a deep breath. Yes, right now, while you are reading. Exhale slowly. Let the tension in your shoulders go. Yes, I know that is where you carry your stress. Do this for a minute.
Now, think about your children. They are blessings. They are also busy and have needs. Sometimes those needs usurp your routines. If you have children under age two, they are fairly dependent on you to meet their basic needs.
Spend a few more minutes breathing and relaxing while you are listing in your head the blessings your children have brought into your life. You can write your blessings down if you like.
Next, let’s talk about your BASIC daily routines. Each of the three daily routines – Morning, Afternoon, and Evening – have only 6 parts. They are not complicated. It is easy to make them complicated, but that happens when you add to them.
Now, if you get started on your Morning Routine because one of the children has a need that you have to meet, you can come back and finish your routine after you take care of your child. You will need the routines written down, so you can keep up with what you have done.
Another way to help yourself get your Morning Routine completed is to get up 15 minutes before your children and do it then.
If you have procrastinate doing your Morning Routine

, I want you to do it as soon as you finish reading this. The six parts of your Morning Routine are, as follows:
1) Make your bed;
2) Get dressed to the shoes;
3) Swish and Swipe;
4) Check your calendar;
5) Reboot the laundry;
6) What’s for Dinner?
Tell me how you are doing with your daily routines. What is hard for you to do?
Your Zone Mission today is put out the Hot Spots in your entryway. Put things away. Toss trash.
Your Home Blessing for today is to toss paper and magazines.
My menu plan for Thursday is chicken and salad.
Have a blessed day

Are you ready to get moving in May with me?

Getting Organized:
In your Home and Homeschool

Dear Friends,
Happy May 1st, friends! This month’s habit is Moving in May. We are going to do some sort of purposeful movement each day this month. What you can do will vary from person to person, but I want you to make that effort, even if it is a walk outside to watch your children play.
If you have been reading my articles for long, you know I am passionate about taking care of my health. I try to make healthy choices for eating. I am purposeful to get enough rest each night. I make it a point to drink water daily. I do my exercise first thing in the morning, so it does not get put off and not done.
If you have not exercised regularly in a while, start with stretching and walking. Be careful to not over stretch. The weather is nice for most of us now, so it can become a part of your daily homeschool routine to get outside and walk and play.
Daily exercise has many benefits. Among them are increasing your health and helping your mental status. We have also just come out of a season where we are not outside as much, and you can absorb vitamin D with 15 minutes outside daily.
Please feel free to check in with me this month and tell me about your progress with daily movement.
Your Zone Mission today is to declutter in the Dining Room for 15 minutes.
Your Home Blessing for today is to wipe windows and mirrors.
My menu plan for Wednesday is soup and sandwiches.
Have a blessed day

How does Plan and Play Day help you?

Getting Organized:
In your Home and Homeschool

Dear Friends,
What did you find today when you went sofa and chair diving? Your zone mission is one that is great for kids to do, if you let them keep any money they find in the cushions.
Tuesday is also plan and play day. Have you done your weekly menu planning and budgeting?
Spending a few minutes weekly on these two things will help your home run more smoothly. By menu planning, you eliminate stressing about what’s for dinner. You save time and money by menu planning.
When you do weekly budget checks and bill paying, you can avoid missing payment dates and also track where your money is being spent. One thing to consider checking is the monthly subscriptions you are paying for. Do you use them all? Check your regular accounts and your credit card statements.
Another thing you can check is your calendars. Most of you use a digital calendar, and many of you also use a paper calendar. Once a week, you need to check them against each other and update as needed. My schedule is staying quite busy, so I check mine against each other on Sunday nights.
Now, let’s think about the PLAY part of plan and play day. What do you enjoy? You need to do things you enjoy daily, but on Tuesday, you can make it extra special.
On Tuesday, I do a quick dusting and vacuumming of the area rug. It’s not a big task when broken down, and it makes such a difference in how my house looks when it’s dusted. Getting my Home Blessings done a few at a time really works for my busy schedule.
If you noticed my menu plan for the week, you might have noted that we are using hamburger as a base for a few meals. We planned this over the weekend. We had hamburgers on Friday and pre-cooked the ground beef for shepherd’s pie on Monday and tacos for Tuesday night. If there is any taco meat leftover, it will go into a soup on Wednesday.
Not only did this simplify my meal planning, it was also economical for us to eat this week. I served fresh veggies with each meal as well.
What are some of your menu planning hacks?
Your Zone Mission today is to check the sofa and chair for treasures.
Your Home Blessing for today is to dust and vacuum.
My menu plan for Tuesday is taco Tuesday.
Have a great day

Decluttering is not one size fits all.

Getting Organized:
In your Home and Homeschool

Dear Friends,
Who needs to release some clutter from the Living Room or Family Room this week? Most of you should have your hand up for this one. We all have clutter. It resides in different places in our homes.
The first thing I want you to do for today’s mission is to gather your decluttering kit. A decluttering kit is simple. You need a box or bag for trash, donations, and things to put away.
Set your timer and spend 15 minutes gathering things that do not belong in your living room. If you put things in the donation box, take it out to the car when you finish today’s mission. Take the trash out. Put away the items that need to be put in other places in your home.
Make this fun with some music. Challenge your children to find things to put away. See how nice your living room looks with less clutter.
Zone 5 Missions: The Living Room
Monday – Declutter for 15 minutes in the Living Room
Tuesday – Check the sofa and chair for clutter
Wednesday – Spend 15 minutes decluttering in the Dining Room
Thursday – Declutter items from the entryway
Friday – Declutter in the Dining Room or sweep the Front Porch
Set your timers and then take a break when it goes off!
This week will bring us the end of one month and the beginning of a new month. We will have two days to declutter in the Living Room or Family Room. Use these days to get the clutter out of those areas.
When we transition to Zone 1, you may not have a dining room to declutter. You can adapt the missions to either spend a few more days decluttering other areas. The beauty of the FlyLady system is that you can adapt it. It’s not a one size fits all.
Your home is unique. Some homes have different rooms and different configurations. You just use the daily mission as your launch pad for the rooms in your home.
Weekly Menu Plan
Monday – Shepherd Pie
Tuesday – Tacos
Wednesday – Soup/Sandwiches
Thursday – Chicken and Salad
Friday – Take out
Enjoy your week! Keep your routines simple.
Your Home Blessing for today is to wash the sheets.
Your Zone Mission for Monday is to spend 15 minutes taking care of clutter in the Living Room.
My menu plan for Monday is shepherd pie.
Have a blessed day!

Finishing Up the Week and Planning for Next Week

Getting Organized:
In your Home and Homeschool

Dear Friends,
Happy Friday! How does your bedroom look today? Do you need to do a 2-minute quick hot spot drill in your room before you start your zone mission? Your bedroom attracts clutter, and you may need to do a 2-minute hot spot drill daily to stay on top of things.
Your mission today is to remake your bed and fluff your pillows. If you have not washed your bedding this week, then I want you to wash everything. But if you washed your sheets already, just take a few minutes to make it extra pretty.
Yesterday I talked to someone who has been to one of my decluttering sessions. She has been making her bed and feeling great about it. She even said she is still happy she made it after her dog jumped up on the bed and messed it up.
Finish up your decluttering missions and home blessings. I want you to have fun this weekend! Check your local calendar of events and go have some fun with your family.
On Sunday night, I want you to sit down for 15 to 30 minutes and do some planning for next week. Check the calendar. Review your menu plan or write one down. Pay bills. Write notes to family and friends. Do some journaling.
When you take a few minutes on Sunday night to do these few things, you will see an impact on how well things flow the next week.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Today’s Zone Mission is to sweep and mop the kitchen.
Your Home Blessing for today is to remake your bed.
My menu plan for Friday is take out.
Have a great weekend!

Taking the Time to Teach Your Children Routines

Getting Organized:
In your Home and Homeschool

Dear Friends,
Today is a special day for me. It’s my grandmother’s birthday. She passed away in 2006, and I miss her every day. I grew up in her home in a multi-generational home. I was very blessed by this!
As I have raised my children, I have made it a point for them to see their grandparents as often as possible. Before my in laws got sick, we had Sunday lunches with them every week. My children got to spend time with their grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Now that my in laws have both passed away (2010 and 2011), my children don’t have the same connection with that side of the family.
My mom lives 20 minutes from our house, and now that she is retired, we see her frequently throughout the week. The boys are with her when I have appointments and meetings. They help her with things around her house and in the yard.
Because I have taught my children routines and how to do things around the house, they are a blessing to others now. They are a huge blessing to me, too. When I am asked how I do all the stuff I do, it’s because of my family. I have help with the house, cooking, and general maintenance.
Resist the urge to do everything yourself and in your own little way of doing them. Teach your children to help you, and remember that there is not always just one way to do things in your home. You might have a preference on how things are done, but you can learn things from how your children do things as well.
Today’s zone mission can be a family affair. Clear off your dresser. Put things away and detail dust. You can give your children the same mission as well. Turn on the music and set your timer.
Take the time to teach your children daily routines.
Your Zone Mission today is declutter items from the tops of your dresser and detail dust.
Your Home Blessing for today is to toss paper and magazines.
My menu plan for Thursday is chicken and salad.
Have a blessed day!

Detail Dusting in Your Bedroom and Anti-Procrastination Day

Getting Organized:
In your Home and Homeschool

Dear Friends,
Today is anti-procrastination day! What are you going to do that you have been putting off?
Your mission in the bedroom is to declutter the extra stuff that has found its way to your night stand and detail dust. Put things back in a way that brings you peace and joy. Resist the urge to keep a pile of books on your night stand.
Your night stand is often the first thing you see in the morning as you are getting up. It may be the last thing you see at night before you go to bed. You deserve to have a table beside of your bed that is free of clutter.
If your children have a lot of clutter in their bedrooms, give them a specific area to declutter and set the timer for 15 minutes. Just telling them to go clean their rooms does not work. They need a specific goal. If they are very young, under age 5, you will need to be a little more supervisory, but they can pick up their toys at that age.
On Wednesday, I give you a quick Home Blessing to allow that time you need for your anti-procrastination task. I don’t want you overwhelmed with a large project on Wednesdays either. Do small steps, and give yourself credit for what you did accomplish. If it is something that has several steps, you might want to spend 15 minutes a day on it.
Who has a large area that needs to be decluttered? I want to hear from you about the area and the type of clutter you need to deal with.
Your Zone Mission today is to declutter the top of your night stand and detail dust.
Your Home Blessing for today is to wipe windows and mirrors.
My menu plan for Wednesday is soup and sandwiches.
Have a blessed day!

Bye, bye, extra clothes! Hello, extra space!

Getting Organized:
In your Home and Homeschool

Dear Friends,
Today, I want to talk to you about clothes. We all have too many clothes. Many of you are holding onto years and years of clothing. If I asked you to find the oldest clothing item in your closet, how old do you think it would be?
Some clothing items are sentimental. I still have my wedding gown. I have the outfits my children came home from the hospital in. I have a baptism gown my mother-in-law made. These items are all stored and not in the regular part of our closets.
A couple of years ago, I pulled some dresses from the very back of my closet. One went back to 1986! I let it go during that purge. Last week, I let go of a lot of the boys’ clothes. This week we will still let go of more clothes.
With my regular monthly purging of clothes, I still have more than I need. The boys have more than they need. I did something today that I did not know I was ready to do. I worked with my oldest son on dismantling the big walk in closet that we built with temporary walls many years ago. At one point, all five boys shared that closet.
I made the decision that it was time to make that bedroom more spacious. Now, I have the holes where the walls and racks were attached patched and drying. I will sand the walls and paint them later in the week. It’s a process.
The room has a standard closet, so there will be a place for my son’s clothes. He is looking forward to moving his furniture around and having a new look for his room.
Each day this week, spend 5 to 10 minutes with each of your children and help them let go of clothes and stuff from their rooms.
Your zone mission today is all about clothes. Put all of the clean clothes away today. If they don’t all fit, you know what to do — purge!
Your Zone Mission today is to put away all of your clothes.
Your Home Blessing for today is to dust and vacuum.
My menu plan for Tuesday is dinner at my mom’s house with Easter leftovers.
Have a great day!
