On this day in 1921, my grandfather was born. He grew up during the Great Depression on a tenant farm. Her served in World War II, and he later served this country in the Air Force. He retired with 20 years of service to the United States. He and my grandmother moved back to North Carolina following his retirement to live near their families. I grew up in my grandparent’s household, and I was very blessed by my grandfather. He had a true servant’s heart, and his greatest joy was his family. He was the fixer of things that broke. Eight years ago, we found out that he had stage 4 kidney cancer, and he passed away on December 13, after we celebrated his birthday.
This time of year can be hard for me, but I choose to remember the happy times with him. I debated on posting this today, but I wanted to honor his memory. I also wanted to encourage those of you who are grieving. I understand. Just keep honoring their memory the way you want to honor it.
The picture above is him holding my youngest child.
